The long, crescent-shaped island of Providenciales (Provo to those in the know) has grown exponentially from a sleepy, sparsely inhabited island in the 1970s to the tourist mecca it is today. The centre of tourism activity in the Turks and Caicos Islands, it is the main port of entry into the country. While development is concentrated in the stunning Grace Bay area, there are communities dotted throughout the island. From the charming and colourful settlement of Blue Hills on the west coast, Five Cays on the east to Turtle Cove, the islandís original tourism hub, there is something for everyone. Relatively undiscovered stretches of beach line the south-east side of the island, Long Bay is as yet untouched by commercial development.
